JR East rolls out "teppay" digital payment service within Suica app
East Japan Railway Co. introduced a new QR-code payment feature called teppay, embedded in the Suica mobile app, to rival services like PayPay.
The railway operator launched teppay on Tuesday, allowing users to pay via barcodes and QR codes directly from the Suica app. The service raises the transaction ceiling to 300,000 yen, far above Suica's 20,000 yen limit, enabling purchases of larger items such as electronics or accommodation fees. When linked to JR East's View Card credit card, payments can reach the card's credit limit without pre-loading funds.
Why it matters
The service expands mobile payment options in Japan, giving commuters a higher-limit, rail-linked alternative to existing wallets.
