Judge calls drug-linked child offenders a "cancer" and orders harsh penalties
A Circuit Court judge denounced drug barons exploiting minors and sentenced two 16-year-olds for a shotgun intimidation attack in Mullingar.
In Mullingar Circuit Criminal Court, Judge Keenan Johnson likened drug barons who recruit children to a "cancer" and urged full State action against them. Two 16-year-old youths admitted to discharging a homemade shotgun at a house in Ardleigh Park on July 14 and to a series of arson and criminal-damage offences across Westmeath, Offaly and Longford. One received a six-year suspended sentence, while the other was remanded until December and then given a three-year suspended sentence, both conditional on not reoffending.
Victims described terror for themselves and their families, with some homes left with boarded-up windows. Garda Kevin Lennon presented video and message evidence linking the teens to the intimidation campaign, and the defendants said they acted under pressure from higher-level drug dealers to settle debts.
