Judge Clears Way for Trump Administration to End TPS Protections for Ethiopia and Somalia

U.S. District Judge Brian Murphy granted the government permission to terminate Temporary Protected Status for more than 5,000 Ethiopian nationals, ending the court-ordered stay that had kept the designation in place. In a separate case, Judge Allison Burroughs rescinded the pause on the termination of Temporary Protected Status for Somali nationals, allowing the administration to move forward with their removal. Both judges cited the Supreme Court’s recent decision limiting lower courts’ review of DHS actions ending TPS designations.

DHS officials, including Secretary Markwayne Mullin, warned that individuals whose TPS is revoked will be considered illegal and may face swift removal. Advocacy groups have challenged the terminations, arguing they were motivated by bias, but the courts found the plaintiffs had not met the legal burden required to block the actions.
