Judge frees Senegalese suspect after assaulting two police officers near Termini
A Senegalese man with an EU passport attacked two State Police officers near Rome's Termini station, was arrested, but a judge ordered his immediate release.
On a Friday morning near Rome's Termini station, two State Police officers from the Viminale commissariat attempted to detain a man holding an EU passport but originally from Senegal. The suspect violently resisted, striking the officers and sustaining injuries that led to charges of assault, resistance, contempt and injury to public officials. He was escorted to a rapid-procedure hearing, where the presiding judge confirmed the legality of the arrest yet ordered his immediate release.
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni criticized the ruling as undermining police work and promised to enhance safety measures for officers. Police union chief Domenico Pianese, speaking for Coisp, described the swift freedom as unacceptable and damaging to the state's authority. In response, Fratelli d'Italia announced a parliamentary questioning of the case, with lawmakers Francesco Filini and Sara Kelany urging accountability for the forces protecting public safety.
