Judge gives government two weeks to act on deported cartel witness

In a Maryland federal case, Judge Stephanie A. Gallagher warned that a cooperating witness, referred to as “John Doe,” is in grave danger after ICE deported him repeatedly to Mexico, a region with active cartel activity. The judge granted the government a two-week window to take “active steps” to facilitate his return to the United States and stressed the importance of safeguarding those who assist law-enforcement. She also stipulated that any future detention must occur no farther than 200 miles from Baltimore and that the witness must have access to counsel.

John Doe, a father of two, had previously received protection from removal under the Convention Against Torture. ICE’s actions included multiple deportations without notifying his family or attorney and stripping him of personal belongings. Attorneys for Doe did not confirm whether the court’s directive has been carried out, and DHS declined to comment.
