Judge Markiewicz Presses President to Complete Oath, Restoring Constitutional Tribunal
Krystian Markiewicz, a newly appointed judge of Poland's Constitutional Tribunal, is urging the president to perform the required oath ceremony before a legal deadline expires.
Krystian Markiewicz served as president of the judges' association Iustitia from 2016 to 2025 before being elected by the Sejm as a judge of the Constitutional Tribunal in 2026. Like Dariusz Szostek, Magdalena Bentkowska, Maciej Taborowski, Marcin Dziurda and Anna Korwin-Piotrowska, he has not taken the constitutional oath before the president, instead participating in an April ceremony in the Sejm's column hall. Because the oath was not administered by the head of state, Tribunal president Bogdan Święczkowski refuses to allow the judges to assume duties.
Markiewicz warned that the president’s inaction threatens the court’s ability to check political power and cited a judgment giving the president a 30-day window to fulfill the duty. He remains calm as a Venice Commission opinion on the oath method is expected soon, and he believes the tribunal should soon be restored as an independent guardian of rights and freedoms.
