Judge permits Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor to testify in London fraud case

A High Court judge has allowed Selman Turk to call Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor as a witness in his fraud lawsuit against Nebahat Isbilen.

In a London High Court proceeding, Turkish entrepreneur Selman Turk has brought a civil claim against Nebahat Isbilen, alleging that she was misled about a £750,000 payment to Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor in 2019, which was later returned. Turk sought to have the former duke testify, arguing that his evidence is material to the case. On Friday, Mr Justice Adam Johnson ruled in Turk's favour, permitting him to rely on a witness summary and to pursue a summons to compel Mountbatten-Windsor’s evidence.

The judge emphasized that fairness requires Turk to present his own case given the gravity of the accusations. The trial is scheduled to begin in November, and a formal witness summons is expected to follow.

Why it matters

The ruling determines whether a high-profile royal can be compelled to testify in a private fraud dispute.
