Julia Fox to Direct First Feature Film Set in 1990s New York

Actress and model Julia Fox is slated to helm her debut feature, a 1993-era coming-of-age drama titled “Sixth Avenue Saints.”

Julia Fox, the former “Uncut Gems” star and downtown fashion figure, is moving behind the camera for her first full-length film, “Sixth Avenue Saints,” a period piece set in 1993 New York. The story centers on a sensitive 12-year-old from Coney Island whose world expands when a streetwise homeless youth shows him the hidden corners of Brooklyn and Manhattan, including piers, queer communities, and the city’s marginalised residents.

Fox also authored the screenplay. Production is actively recruiting local extras, advertising on Backstage for adults aged 35 to 79 and promising $20 per hour with a $100 daily minimum, while noting that professional experience is not mandatory. Casting agent Katya Chernetsova confirmed these details. Fox has not commented on the project, and the film follows her 2021 short “Fantasy Girls,” which explored Nevada sex workers.

Why it matters

The project marks a notable shift for a high-profile actress into directing, potentially influencing indie film trends.
