Junta-led Sahel Nations Launch Russia-backed TV Channel to Counter Western Media

Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger have started a joint television network, Tafouk TV, and signed a cooperation agreement with Russia’s RT to promote non-Western perspectives.

The three junta-run West African states inaugurated Tafouk TV in September, aiming to offer programming that downplays Western viewpoints. The channel received praise from Russia’s ambassador in Bamako and entered a partnership with the parent company of RT to jointly cover events. These moves follow the countries’ 2023 formation of the Alliance of Sahel States, their severance of ties with France, and a deepening defence relationship with Russia. Moscow also plans to establish new cultural and educational centres, known as “Russia Houses,” in Mali and other African nations.

Why it matters

The launch signals expanding Russian media influence and a strategic shift away from French ties in the Sahel region.
