Junts demands Pedro Sánchez step aside to renegotiate coalition terms
Junts says it will only back a PSOE investiture if Pedro Sánchez withdraws and a fiscal pact for Catalonia is reached.
Miriam Nogueras, Junts’ Madrid spokesperson, stated that the party will demand a Catalan-focused fiscal deal and the resignation of Pedro Sánchez as preconditions for any future coalition with the PSOE. She criticized Sánchez for missing an opportunity and suggested that the PSOE must prioritize the party and consensus over its leader. Nogueras invoked the “Starmer route,” pointing to the British prime minister’s resignation as a model.
While Junts previously ruled out backing either Sánchez or Alberto Núñez Feijóo, it now signals flexibility if it remains a pivotal vote. A partnership with the PP is seen as improbable due to Vox’s role in a potential government. The party framed itself as the “useful” Catalan voice, aiming to place Catalan interests at the centre of any national agreement.
Why it matters
Junts’ stance could reshape post-election coalition dynamics and affect fiscal policy for Catalonia.
