Jury in Abby Choi murder trial dismissed after juror cites health concerns
The jury hearing the case against three men accused of murdering Abby Choi was discharged after a juror withdrew for health reasons, postponing the trial.
In the murder trial of three men charged with killing celebrity Abby Choi, the jury was dismissed after a juror submitted a health-related withdrawal request. Deputy High Court Judge Brian Keith explained that continuing with the eight remaining jurors was not permissible, as the case had not yet entered the prosecution's opening statement or evidence phase. Law also bars replacing a juror with a direct substitute, requiring a fresh jury drawn from the same candidate pool.
The original jury, composed of seven men and two women, had been sworn in the previous Thursday. The defendants - Kwong Kong-chi, Kwong Kong-kit and Kwong Kau - are Choi's ex-husband, former brother-in-law and former father-in-law, accused of the February 21, 2023 killing at Lung Mei Village in Tai Po and of obstructing her lawful burial. The trial will resume on Wednesday with a newly selected jury.
