Just Eat pauses AI-generated menu photos after bizarre food images spark confusion
Just Eat halted a trial that used artificial intelligence to create menu pictures after customers reported odd depictions such as sausages floating in soda.
Just Eat has suspended a pilot program that generated menu images with artificial intelligence for partner eateries that do not provide their own photos. The service marked each picture as “AI-generated,” but several outputs were wildly inaccurate, including a soda-bread offering illustrated with sausages, bacon and fried eggs floating in a cola glass, and a Chinese “salt and pepper chips” dish rendered as plain seasoned potatoes.
Customers shared the odd visuals on social media, expressing bewilderment. In response, the company apologized, said it would delete the faulty images, and paused further use of the tool while refining it. Just Eat noted it supports thousands of small restaurants with professional photography and aims to ensure menu photos accurately reflect the dishes.
