Justice Department to Deploy About 1,000 Election Monitors for 2026 Midterms

The Justice Department announced plans to station roughly 1,000 poll monitors across the country for the 2026 midterm elections, focusing on fairness and compliance with state laws.

The Justice Department revealed that about 1,000 election monitors will be sent to polling places nationwide for the upcoming 2026 midterm elections, with the goal of observing the process rather than intervening. Harmeet Dhillon explained that the monitors will receive training identical to that used by earlier administrations and will focus on issues such as accessibility barriers and alleged fraud. Their legal standing will match that of any state-approved monitor, and the agency will respect each state’s perimeter rules.

This effort marks a historic scale for a Republican-led administration, surpassing the 86 jurisdictions covered in 2024 and 64 in 2022 under the previous administration. Dhillon also highlighted the DOJ’s recent civil-rights outreach urging states to keep voter registration lists accurate, particularly regarding non-citizen entries. The overall aim is to bolster public confidence that elections are conducted cleanly and results are accepted.

Why it matters

Nationwide monitoring aims to increase confidence in the 2026 midterms and address concerns about voting accessibility and fraud.
