Justice Minister Van Weel faces parliamentary grilling over mishandled crime reports

David van Weel is set to appear before the Tweede Kamer to justify his earlier statement that the parliament had been presented with a distorted view of serious crime complaints that largely went unanswered. The Algemene Rekenkamer reported that a substantial portion of filings concerning violent offences, hard-drug manufacturing and identity theft were either set aside or stopped because investigative resources were insufficient.

Van Weel first argued that the audit painted a misleading picture, suggesting many reports lacked investigative leads, but later recharacterised his remark as a "misstatement" and explained that the police focus on leads while the audit looks at case severity. He now acknowledges that not all dismissed cases lacked leads. JA21 MP Ingrid Coenradie, a former justice secretary, said the chamber is outraged and that a motion of no confidence could certainly be considered. The debate comes amid broader criticism of the justice ministry’s handling of victim complaints and prison overcrowding.
