Justice Minister Żurek orders suspension of three judges pending immunity removal
Justice Minister Żurek announced the immediate removal of three judges from hearing cases and urged the prosecutor to seek the loss of their immunities.
Poland’s Justice Minister Żurek declared that three judges will be barred from adjudicating cases while the National Prosecutor’s Office seeks to revoke their parliamentary immunities. The prosecutors allege the judges engaged in impersonation of state bodies, misuse of confiscated seals and the creation of cases targeting independent judges. The disciplinary chamber of the Supreme Court, which will review the immunity removal, is criticized by Żurek as being formed with the participation of a "politicised neoKRS" and therefore not independent.
He urged the prosecutor to also request the exclusion of judges appointed under flawed procedures from future panels. All three judges—Lasota, Schab and Radzik—were appointed by former Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro. Żurek emphasized that the rule of law must prevail and that the era of impunity has ended.
Why it matters
The move could reshape Poland's judiciary by removing judges accused of abusing their authority.
