He wagered that he would not attend the ceremony, a prediction that proved correct and yielded about $18,000 in winnings.
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission subsequently levied a $35,000 fine against him, and Kalshi added a $71,356 penalty for the violation. The move marks Kalshi’s first lifetime ban of any user.
