Kamala Harris backs Scott Colom at Mississippi rally ahead of Senate vote

Former Vice President Kamala Harris visited Mississippi to campaign for Democratic Senate nominee Scott Colom, urging voters to reject Republican incumbent Cindy Hyde-Smith.

Kamala Harris traveled to Columbus, Mississippi, to rally support for Democratic Senate candidate Scott Colom, describing his campaign as a chance to make history. Addressing a crowd at the high school gym where Colom once played basketball, she stressed that the race is a pivotal fight for Democrats and that the state matters. Harris attacked President Donald Trump’s administration as corrupt and warned that Hyde-Smith, a staunch Trump ally, has voted for a $1 trillion Medicaid cut.

Colom used the event to blame Hyde-Smith for high prices and promised to reverse Medicaid and ACA subsidy cuts. The rally was followed by a roundtable on rural health in Clarksdale with Rep. Bennie Thompson and local leaders, underscoring the state’s long-standing healthcare challenges. Republicans countered by scheduling Trump to campaign for Hyde-Smith in Corinth, signaling the high stakes of the contest.

Why it matters

The race could determine whether Mississippi elects its first Black statewide official and signal broader shifts in Southern politics.
