Kanpur residents stage dramatic protest over flooded potholes on 80 Feet Road

In Kanpur, residents of the Barra neighbourhood staged a theatrical protest on the rain-scarred 80 Feet Road, dubbing it “Yamlok Dwar” and unfurling a banner that labeled the stretch a road to hell. A young participant dressed as one outlet deity Yamraj performed a ribbon-cutting to spotlight the multitude of large, water-logged potholes that have turned the thoroughfare into a hazard for motorists. Demonstrators held the municipal corporation, Nagar Nigam, responsible for the neglect and demanded immediate repairs.
The unrest reflects a broader pattern of daily protests over the city’s deteriorating road network, including a recent incident where traders in Kidwainagar’s marble market fell into a pothole, and a prior demonstration on Sariya VIP Road in Jajmau where an 18-foot-deep hole led a Cantt MLA to stay inside it for over four hours to press officials for action. Business groups such as the Bharatiya Udyog Vyapar Mandal have also complained that the poor infrastructure is harming commerce. Authorities have yet to announce a concrete remediation plan.
