Kansas Senator Roger Marshall sued hundreds of patients for unpaid medical bills

Roger Marshall, now a Republican senator from Kansas, previously worked as an obstetrician-gynecologist and aggressively pursued unpaid medical bills from his patients. Court records show he sued more than 700 individuals, imposing 18% interest and filing arrest warrants for debts as low as $101, with 81 arrests recorded. The lawsuits often involved new mothers in the impoverished, largely uninsured community of Barton County, leading to wage garnishments and jail appearances.

Marshall stopped practicing medicine after his 2016 election but kept seeking payments until 2021, sometimes using his own practice, Heartland Regional OBGYN, as the plaintiff. While his spokesperson argues judges issue warrants for missed court dates, documents reveal Marshall routinely requested them. The revelations emerge as Marshall faces a tight re-election race against Democrat Adam Hamilton, raising questions about his compassion and policy positions on health care.
