Karnataka announces ₹2,500 subsidy for up to five million drought-hit farmers
Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara said Karnataka will give a ₹2,500 input subsidy to roughly 4.6-5 million farmers affected by drought, costing ₹1,250 crore.
Karnataka's Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister G Parameshwara announced an immediate input subsidy of ₹2,500 for about 4.6-5 million farmers suffering from a prolonged drought, with a total outlay of ₹1,250 crore. He stressed that only taluks meeting the Centre's criteria were designated drought-affected and denied any political interference. The state has already identified 177 taluks as drought-hit and is pursuing additional central assistance, including a request to declare the situation a national disaster.
Parameshwara noted that 49 lakh farmers have enrolled in crop-insurance, and the state will contribute ₹1,242 crore toward its share of the scheme. Funding from the State Disaster Response Fund and earlier earmarked drought-relief money will support these commitments.
Why it matters
The subsidy aims to alleviate severe crop losses for millions of farmers and tests Karnataka's capacity to manage a major drought.
