Karnataka arrests one suspect with terror links, probes another youth

Karnataka Home Minister Priyank Kharge announced the arrest of one individual suspected of terrorist connections and said investigations continue on a second youth.

A joint operation by central authorities and Karnataka’s Internal Security Division resulted in the detention of two non-resident youths suspected of using social media to liaise with terrorist elements. After reviewing the evidence, the home ministry concluded that one of the individuals was in ongoing contact with a suspected terror network and has been taken into custody, whereas the second youth is still being investigated.

The minister highlighted that this is the fifth incident of its kind involving migrants from Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and West Bengal. He urged employers across sectors to verify workers' backgrounds and announced plans for a meeting with industry groups to develop standard verification procedures. Kharge also reaffirmed that existing anti-terror units, such as the Anti-Terrorism Squad and the Garuda Force, are sufficient for handling sleeper-cell threats.

Why it matters

The arrest underscores growing concerns over extremist recruitment via social media and the need for tighter background checks on migrant workers.
