Kataib Hezbollah Halts Operations, Keeps Air-Defense Role Amid Failed Talks

Kataib Hezbollah's leader Ahmad al-Hamdawi said the group will pause all combat except targeting hostile aircraft, after negotiations on weapon regulation fell through.

Ahmad al-Hamdawi announced that Kataib Hezbollah will suspend its military actions, limiting any future strikes to hostile planes that breach Iraqi airspace. The decision follows a dead-end in talks with the government over how to regulate the militia's arms. Jaafar al-Husseini, speaking for the umbrella coalition, said the fighters will retain their weapons as a safeguard for Iraq. He added that any remaining arms will still be used against forces that threaten the nation and its people.

Why it matters

The pause could alter Iraq's internal security dynamics and affect its fight against external threats.
