Katie Porter endorses Scott Wiener in tight San Francisco race to replace Nancy Pelosi
Former California congresswoman Katie Porter has endorsed state Senator Scott Wiener in his bid for the San Francisco House seat being vacated by Nancy Pelosi.
Katie Porter, out of the California governor’s race, announced her endorsement of state Senator Scott Wiener in the contest for the San Francisco congressional seat left open by Nancy Pelosi’s retirement. The endorsement arrives about a month before the November election, where Wiener faces San Francisco Supervisor Connie Chan, also a Democrat. While a September Tavern Research poll gave Wiener an 11-point advantage, Chan has narrowed the gap after receiving Pelosi’s endorsement and support from labor unions and figures such as Barbara Boxer and Jackie Speier.
Porter, a former Orange County congresswoman, cited Wiener’s legislative achievements on housing construction, affordable healthcare and public transit as key factors. Wiener thanked Porter, emphasizing their shared goal of making San Francisco affordable for working families. The race is shaping up as a closely watched battle for a seat held by Pelosi for nearly forty years.
Why it matters
The endorsement could influence a pivotal race to fill Nancy Pelosi's long-held San Francisco congressional seat.
