Kazakhstan dismisses defense minister after naval drill kills 14 servicemen

Fourteen Kazakh soldiers died during a naval exercise on September 24, prompting the firing of the defence minister and investigations into five officials.

During the 2026 Caspian Defense exercise in southwestern Kazakhstan, a rapid weather shift caused strong winds that pushed seventeen servicemen into the Caspian Sea, resulting in fourteen fatalities and three rescues. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev announced a national day of mourning and faced criticism over the handling of information for grieving families, who gathered at the Aktau morgue demanding names. In response, the government dismissed Defence Minister Dauren Kosanov after just over fifteen months in office and installed former special operations commander Aidos Myrzakhmetov.

Police have detained five Ministry of Defence officials—among them the naval forces chief of staff, two unit commanders, and a naval infantry company commander—on charges of negligence and breach of navigation rules. Military analyst Yermek Seitbattalov warned that systemic training and safety shortcomings remain despite the reshuffle, emphasizing the need for reforms to prevent future tragedies.
