KB Kookmin Bank adds 2,091 victims to recent data breach tally

KB Kookmin Bank said an additional 2,091 people were found to have had their personal data compromised, bringing the total number of affected individuals to 2,210.

KB Kookmin Bank reported that a further 2,091 individuals were identified as having their personal information exposed in the hacking incident that occurred earlier this month, raising the overall count to 2,210 after 119 cases were disclosed on Oct. 2. The newly identified group comprises 1,631 bank customers and 460 executives or staff members of other companies. The bank clarified that the rise in numbers resulted from a thorough re-examination of the compromised data and related processes, not from any additional intrusion.

The compromised details were limited to names, telephone numbers and residential addresses. A bank official expressed regret for the initial uncertainty about the breach’s scope and promised to enhance protective measures. KB Kookmin is among more than a dozen financial institutions that have suffered similar cyber-attacks this month.

Why it matters

The expanded breach widens the pool of South Korean citizens whose personal data may be misused, highlighting ongoing cybersecurity risks for banks.
