Kelowna sees surge in advance voting as municipal election nears

Advance voting at Kelowna's Parkinson Recreation Centre has drawn a steady flow of voters, with day-one turnout roughly double that of the same day in 2022.

A consistent stream of residents queued at Kelowna's Parkinson Recreation Centre for advance voting on the third day of the early voting period, with officials highlighting that the first day’s participation was roughly double the same-day figure from the 2022 election. Chief Election Officer Michael Jud indicated the city aims to reach a total early-vote count comparable to last year's overall advance tally. The municipal election, scheduled for Oct. 17, will see 37 candidates competing for council seats, including four newcomers expected to replace departing incumbents.

Issues such as public safety, development and transportation dominate the campaign discourse. Political scientist Stewart Prest observed similar early-voting spikes in other B.C. municipalities, suggesting voter frustration with current city governance may be driving the enthusiasm. However, it remains uncertain whether the early surge will translate into higher overall turnout, which was about 30 % in the 2022 civic election.
