Kennedy Center shuts down for at least a week over acute safety risks

Matt Floca, the Kennedy Center’s executive director and chief operating officer, filed a federal court document stating that the iconic performing-arts venue must close for at least seven days to assess "acute risks to public safety" stemming from continued structural deterioration. The temporary closure, imposed without advance notice on Wednesday, follows an inspection that identified problems with the roof terrace canopy and a partial ceiling collapse earlier this month.

Floca said the shutdown could be extended after a safety evaluation scheduled for next week. This action is distinct from a board decision on Tuesday to close the center indefinitely for extensive repairs. The filing was prompted by an emergency court request from a Democratic congresswoman who serves as a trustee, alleging the closure was unlawful. Officials plan to use the pause to determine the extent of the hazards before deciding on further steps.
