Kent mother given eight hours to live after sudden sepsis diagnosis

Tracey Easton, 52, from Sheerness, Kent, struggled to get out of bed on the weekend of May 2-3 due to chronic conditions such as pulmonary blood clots, Crohn’s disease and osteoarthritis. Her family did not realize the severity until she was admitted to Medway Maritime Hospital in Gillingham on the morning of May 4. Doctors quickly diagnosed severe sepsis that had perforated an organ, giving her only about eight hours to live and a mere 1% chance of surviving surgery.

Her son Dawson McFarland described the shock of receiving the call and recalled his mother’s selfless nature. In her memory, Dawson and his football teammates are organizing a charity football event on October 10 to raise funds for the UK Sepsis Trust. The charity aims to increase awareness of sepsis, which causes roughly 48,000 deaths annually in the UK.
