Kenyan officials have launched an unusual public campaign, sharing a list of roughly twenty recommendations for citizens to brace for a super El Niño. Advice ranges from basic roof and gutter maintenance to more serious steps such as storing a month’s supply of medication, planning household evacuations, and securing livestock on higher ground. The phenomenon is expected to amplify the October-December rainy season, raising the likelihood of damaging floods and landslides that could isolate rural communities.

Scientists from the World Meteorological Organization warn that 2026 could see the most intense El Niño ever recorded, with its strongest phase typically occurring at Christmas and effects persisting until February 2027. Residents are urged to acquire flashlights, radios and other emergency gear as power cuts become likely. The advisory reflects growing concern that climate extremes could undermine Kenya’s development and food security.
