Kenyan cult leader Paul Mackenzie faces murder charges for 191 deaths
Paul Mackenzie, a self-styled pastor, and 29 followers have been charged with murdering 191 people after authorities uncovered more than 400 bodies in shallow graves in Kenya's Shakahola Forest.
Kenyan authorities have charged Paul Mackenzie, a self-proclaimed pastor, and 29 of his followers with the murder of 191 individuals after discovering a mass burial site containing over 400 bodies in Shakahola Forest, Kilifi County. The cult, Good News International Ministries, allegedly persuaded parents to let their children starve to death in anticipation of an apocalyptic event. Autopsies revealed most victims succumbed to starvation, while a number of children appeared to have been beaten, suffocated or strangled.
Mackenzie, who previously ran the Times TV channel to spread his end-times sermons, denied the accusations in court. The case also includes additional counts of terrorism, denial of education for children and radicalisation, stemming from an investigation that began in 2023 following reports from local herders.
