Kenyan entrepreneur Wawira Njiru receives German Africa Prize for school-feeding program
Wawira Njiru was awarded the German Africa Prize for expanding her Food4Education initiative, which now supplies meals to over 660,000 children in Kenya.
The German Africa Foundation announced that Wawira Njiru will receive its annual German Africa Prize in recognition of her Food4Education social enterprise. Njiru’s project began as a modest effort feeding 25 schoolchildren and has grown to serve more than 660,000 pupils at over 1,900 schools throughout Kenya. The program sources roughly 80% of its ingredients from smallholder farmers, creating a reliable market for local produce while delivering fresh meals.
Claus Stäcker, chair of the independent prize jury and director of programs for Africa at one outlet, highlighted the initiative as an African answer to a worldwide problem. The ceremony is scheduled for the fall at the Allianz Forum in Berlin. Njiru described the award as encouragement for her persistent work and noted that her model is now being shared with other governments seeking similar solutions.
