Kerala appoints IUML leader Mayin Haji to head reconstituted Waqf Board
The Kerala government dissolved the existing Waqf Board and installed a new nine-member committee chaired by IUML vice-president Mayin Haji.
The Kerala government issued an order on Friday to disband the Waqf Board that was created in March by the former LDF government and headed by K S Hamsa. In its place, a new nine-member committee has been formed, with Mayin Haji, the state vice-president of the IUML, appointed as chairman. The panel also includes IUML leader Kurukkoli Moideen and other members such as Musthafal Faizi, Siras D Capsi, Thodiyoor Muhammed Kunju Maulavi, Sajna Firoz, Jaseem Sabaha, Dr Abdul Majeed, and Salahi Madina Begham.
The composition reflects input from a P Sunni faction led by Kanthapuram A P Aboobacker Musliyar and the Mujahid faction. This reshuffle comes as demonstrations continue against the Centre's changes to the Waqf law and broader controversies over the oversight of Waqf assets. The newly formed board is expected to hold its inaugural meeting shortly after the order.
Why it matters
The change could influence how Waqf properties are managed amid national debates over religious endowment laws.
