Kerala faces acute power shortage amid weak monsoon and rising demand

Kerala is experiencing a severe electricity shortfall, prompting the state board to enforce short evening blackouts that have affected vulnerable residents and medical facilities. The crisis stems from a 27% deficit in monsoon rainfall, elevated daytime and nighttime temperatures, and a record peak-hour demand of 4,900-5,100 MW, driven by air-conditioners, coolers, EV charging and induction stoves. Domestic generation meets only about one-fifth of consumption, forcing the board to rely heavily on external purchases and power exchanges.

The chief minister said negotiations with neighboring states and power producers aim to resolve the issue within a week, and the board chairman is seeking agreements in Delhi with the nuclear power corporation. A new power policy and supply plan are slated for implementation from October 1.
