Keurig unveils $500 Alta machine that brews compostable coffee pucks
Keurig has started pre-orders for the Alta, a $499.99 single-serve brewer that uses fully compostable, seaweed-coated coffee pucks instead of plastic pods.
Keurig’s latest offering, the Alta, enters preorder at $499.99 and promises the convenience of single-serve coffee without plastic or aluminum pods. Its proprietary AltaRounds are compressed coffee grounds wrapped in a plant-based, seaweed-derived coating that is fully compostable, though they are presently packaged in plastic sleeves until paper alternatives are ready. The launch bundle includes a set of glassware and six boxes of AltaRounds, with six roast and flavor options available at debut.
In addition to standard brewing, the Alta can produce espresso, puncturing the puck with spikes and delivering high-pressure water, then topping drinks with foam from an integrated frother. Users operate the machine via a large touchscreen that displays recipes, and Wi-Fi connectivity allows Keurig to add new drink programs as more puck varieties are released.
Why it matters
It offers a mainstream coffee solution that reduces plastic waste while adding espresso capabilities.
