Key divisions emerge among five contenders in the French left primary
The French social-democratic left is holding an online primary, with five candidates competing to become the 2027 standard-bearer.
The Socialist Party’s internal election will take place entirely online between Friday morning and Saturday night, followed by a prompt tally of votes. European Parliament member Raphaël Glucksmann is currently the favorite, yet analysts doubt he can secure an outright win in the first round. Throughout three televised debates, Glucksmann endured a barrage of accusations, ranging from sexist remarks to claims of being a secret agent of Macronism and lacking experience for top leadership.
Some rivals have even likened him to a masked bandit attempting a “hold-up” of the party. Nonetheless, Glucksmann told France 2 that he remains committed to the democratic process and hopes the contest concludes swiftly.
