KG Growth Partners eyes AI data center in vacant San Francisco Centre mall

KG Growth Partners has applied for a permit to convert the empty Centre mall in San Francisco into a large AI data center, despite a citywide moratorium on new facilities.

Months after the Centre mall shut its doors, KG Growth Partners submitted a request to the City of San Francisco for a permit to build a massive AI data center in the former Bloomingdale’s area. The firm said it is collaborating with an unnamed partner and a known AI lab to create an AI-controlled living space that would also support a rooftop garden whose water would be donated to a nonprofit aiding transient shelters.

CEO Jared Kreiger emphasized that the ground floors would stay active and open, contrasting with a “dark box” data center. The initiative coincides with Mayor Daniel Lurie’s recent 45-day moratorium on new data center approvals, tasking the Planning Department with impact studies. Earlier attempts to redevelop the mall included bids from B3 Investors and proposals for sports complexes by Urban Land Development and TMG Partners, all of which have so far fallen through.
