Kidney problems ignored, specialist says doctors failed Maradona, court hears

A kidney specialist testified that Maradona's doctors overlooked critical renal warnings during his final weeks, as a Buenos Aires court examines criminal negligence charges.

In a criminal negligence case against seven health professionals, including Maradona's personal physician, a specialist highlighted missed renal red flags. Nephrologist Hernan Trimarchi told the Buenos Aires-area court that the former football star suffered chronic kidney disease, with heavy, lesion-laden kidneys linked to obesity, cocaine use and hypertension. He argued that at minimum daily check-ups, nursing care, blood work and vital-sign monitoring were required, yet no tests were recorded during the two-week home recovery.

The trial also probes the decision to let Maradona rest in a rented house rather than a medical facility, noting his distended abdomen and severe pulmonary edema at death. The accused face up to 25 years in prison if convicted, and the proceedings are expected to continue into September.

Why it matters

The case could set a precedent for medical accountability in high-profile patient care.
