Kiev to implement scheduled electricity cuts amid intensified Russian attacks
Energy provider DTEK announced planned power outages in Kiev starting at 15:00 local time, responding to a request from Ukrenergo after massive Russian strikes on the grid.
Ukrainian energy firm DTEK confirmed that Kiev will undergo controlled power outages beginning at 15:00 local time, extending through the rest of the day, as part of a stabilisation effort requested by national grid operator Ukrenergo. The announcement, posted on Telegram, follows a wave of massive Russian attacks on the country's energy infrastructure that have become routine since the invasion began in 2022. DTEK urged consumers to use electricity responsibly to ease the load on the grid and avoid emergency shutdowns.
Kyiv's mayor Vitali Kliciko described the situation as "dramatic," accusing Moscow of trying to destroy the capital. The city previously endured similar scheduled cuts after heavy strikes at the end of September, which were lifted after two days. Authorities fear a repeat of the harsh winter of the previous year, when extensive bombing left millions without heat and light.
Why it matters
The scheduled outages highlight the ongoing strain on Ukraine's power grid from Russian attacks, affecting daily life in the capital.
