Kim Ji-yong Takes Charge of New Serious Crimes Investigation Agency in Seoul
Kim Ji-yong has begun his duties as the first chief of the Serious Crimes Investigation Agency, ordering a task force to establish the unit.
Kim Ji-yong reported for duty as the inaugural chief of the Serious Crimes Investigation Agency on Friday, stepping into the agency’s central Seoul headquarters. He immediately ordered the creation of a task force to help the fledgling organization solidify its structure and develop a response framework for serious crimes. After receiving briefings covering the agency’s work over the past two weeks, Kim highlighted the need for swift progress in staffing, facilities, and operational systems while delivering concrete results.
He called for strict political neutrality and investigative independence, insisting that vulnerable groups and crime victims receive uncompromised protection. The ceremony to officially inaugurate Kim was postponed because of scheduling conflicts within the presidential office, with a new date expected next week. President Lee Jae Myung approved Kim’s appointment on Thursday, the same day the National Assembly completed his confirmation hearing report, ending a two-week leadership gap.
