Kim Jong Un declares new destroyer a component of nuclear response
North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un said the newly commissioned destroyer Kang Kon will join the country’s nuclear response system during its launch ceremony in Wonsan.
During a Sept. 6 event in Wonsan, Kim Jong Un unveiled the destroyer Kang Kon, a 5,000-ton vessel he said would be incorporated into North Korea’s nuclear response framework. Assigned to the Eastern Fleet, the ship will operate in waters contested by the United States, South Korea and Japan. Although Pyongyang has not confirmed any nuclear payload on the destroyer, the leader’s remarks signal an intent to extend nuclear deterrence to the sea.
The Kang Kon follows the June commissioning of the similarly classed Choe Hyon, indicating a broader naval modernization drive. Analysts note that maritime platforms could complicate monitoring and response efforts compared with land-based missiles. Kim has also spoken of developing nuclear-armed submarines, suggesting future expansion of sea-based nuclear capabilities.
