Kim Yo Jong warns of serious tension on Korean border amid leader rumors

Kim Yo Jong said South Korea’s military actions have created a grave situation along the southern border as speculation about Kim Jong Un’s health spreads.

Kim Yo Jong, the sister of North Korea’s supreme leader, issued a statement condemning South Korea for firing warning shots and issuing broadcast warnings at the border on multiple occasions since August. She characterized the environment as a grave situation caused by what she called reckless behavior by the ROK military. In response, she said the North is considering deploying more tactical strike means along the southern border and may resume loudspeaker broadcasts.

Her remarks appear as unverified rumors about Kim Jong Un’s health circulate online. Earlier this month, South Korea blamed North Korea for mine explosions that wounded three of its soldiers, a claim the North denied while warning of retaliation. Border incidents have risen in recent years as both sides have fortified their front lines with mines and barriers.

Why it matters

Rising border tensions could destabilize the Korean Peninsula and affect regional security.
