Kinetic launches reminder alerts to curb empty seats after free fares boost demand
Tasmania's Kinetic bus operator introduced a text and email reminder system to reduce unused reservations that have risen since public transport became free.
Free public transport introduced in March led to a record surge in Kinetic's intercity bus usage, up about 20%, but also a spike in no-show bookings that left seats empty and caused frustration for waiting passengers. Kinetic Group CEO Michael Sewards explained that without a fare, riders lack incentive to cancel, prompting the firm to test a reminder service on the Hobart-Launceston line. The pilot sent texts and emails 48 hours before departure, and almost one-tenth of recipients chose to cancel, reducing standby lines at transit hubs.
Following the trial's success, Kinetic will roll the system out across Tasmania and may later require confirmation to keep a seat. Transport Minister Kerry Vincent praised the initiative but noted that the smart-ticketing project with Cubic remains on hold while the free-fare policy is evaluated. Public transport will stay free until June 20, 2027.
Why it matters
The measure aims to improve seat availability for commuters as free fares strain bus capacity.
