New Zealand's Kiwi Ferns open their Women's Rugby League World Cup run at McDonald Jones Stadium, facing Fiji with seven newcomers in the squad.
At McDonald Jones Stadium in Newcastle, the New Zealand Kiwi Ferns begin their Women's Rugby League World Cup campaign against Fiji. Ricky Henry selected seven first-time internationals, among them Olympic gold medallist Stacey Waaka, who moved from sevens to league two years ago and now plays for the Warriors women. The squad also features former Cook Islands representatives Kaiyah Atai and Chantay Kiria-Ratu, as well as former Jillaroos Shannon Mato and Zahara Temara.
Co-captains Georgia Hale and Raecene McGregor will again wear the captain’s armband, aiming to overturn the disappointment of a 54-4 defeat in the 2022 final. The match kicks off at 3.50 pm, with the Kiwi Ferns hoping their depth and new talent can drive them toward a fourth title.
Why it matters
The game marks the start of the women's World Cup and showcases a revamped Kiwi Ferns squad aiming for redemption.
