KKR to commit over RM2.6 billion to expand Petronas' renewable arm in India
US private-equity firm KKR plans to invest more than RM2.6 billion in Petronas' Indian renewable energy subsidiary, Gentari Renewable India, to fund growth and debt reduction.
Kuala Lumpur-based KKR announced a planned injection of over RM2.6 billion into Gentari Renewable India Pte Ltd, the Indian arm of Petronas' Gentari Sdn Bhd renewable business. The investment will support the development of solar, wind and hybrid projects, as well as green-hydrogen and ammonia production through partners like ReNew and AM Green. Although KKR will not receive an immediate ownership share, the agreement gives it the right to purchase a stake in the future.
The funding also aims to reduce Gentari's debt and may finance acquisitions of stakes in its current Indian joint ventures. KKR's broader Indian clean-energy exposure includes holdings in Hero Future Energies, Serentica Renewables and a position in power-transmission firm IndiGrid.
Why it matters
The deal boosts financing for renewable projects in India, a key market for global clean-energy expansion.
