Klamath River dam removals trigger rapid return of over 21,000 Chinook salmon

Four lower Klamath River dams were taken down in 2024, and within two salmon runs more than 21,000 adult Chinook moved upstream, reclaiming about 88% of their historic range.

In a large-scale dam-removal project, four lower Klamath River dams built between 1903 and 1962 were dismantled, allowing the river to flow freely for the first time since the early 1900s. Fish biologists and tribal monitors installed weirs and cameras to track the comeback of salmon. Within two spawning runs, 21,052 adult Chinook were documented moving upstream, reaching spawning grounds that had been inaccessible for more than a century.

Based on historic habitat maps, this migration represents about 88% of the Chinook's former range in the basin. The swift return highlights the species' instinctive ability to locate new habitat and suggests the river can now support larger runs, provided other stressors are managed. The restoration also promises broader ecological and cultural benefits for the river’s wildlife and indigenous communities.
