Klay Thompson parts ways with Mavericks, set to join Miami Heat
The Dallas Mavericks and Klay Thompson reached a buyout, clearing the way for the veteran shooter to sign with the Miami Heat.
Klay Thompson’s stint with the Dallas Mavericks concluded when the club and the player mutually agreed to a buyout, ending the final year of his three-year, $50 million deal. In Dallas he averaged 11.7 points and shot 38.3% from three, largely serving as a reserve and starting only eight games. The buyout clears his path to sign with the Miami Heat after he clears waivers, a team that recently acquired Giannis Antetokounmpo in a blockbuster trade.
Mavericks president of basketball operations Masai Ujiri praised Thompson’s career and wished him well. Thompson, a five-time All-Star and four-time champion with the Golden State Warriors, remains among the league’s top three-point shooters, now fourth all-time. Miami hopes to pair him with Antetokounmpo and center Bam Adebayo to bolster their championship aspirations.
Why it matters
Thompson’s move could reshape the Heat’s roster and impact the Eastern Conference playoff picture.
