Kneecap and folk singer to perform amid escalating Garvaghy Road parade standoff

Irish rapper Kneecap and folk singer Radie Peat are set to appear on Garvaghy Road Sunday as the week-long dispute over the Orange Order march in Drumcree continues.

A sustained standoff over the Orange Order’s attempt to march through Garvaghy Road in Drumcree has persisted for eight days, following the Parades Commission’s approval of the first such route in three decades. Residents, supported by Sinn Féin, the SDLP and People Before Profit, blocked the 35-man Portadown District Orange Order contingent, prompting the PSNI to deem the protest unlawful because it was not notified to the commission.

High-profile figures including Michelle O’Neill and Emma Little-Pengelly have taken part in the protests, while the Orange Order, backed by the DUP and TUV, insists the march should proceed. On Sunday evening, Irish rapper Kneecap and folk singer Radie Peat are expected to perform on Garvaghy Road. A fresh legal challenge will be heard by the Court of Appeal in Belfast, and Northern Ireland Secretary Sir Chris Bryant has called for calm, though his remarks were criticised by Sinn Féin leaders. Police continue to warn that anyone blocking the road faces criminal consequences.
