Koch-aligned group spends $3 million on ads for Wisconsin GOP governor hopeful
Americans for Prosperity-Wisconsin launched a $3 million advertising push to boost Republican Rep. Tom Tiffany in the close gubernatorial race against Democrat David Crowley.
A Koch-linked conservative organization, Americans for Prosperity-Wisconsin, announced a $3 million ad blitz aimed at helping Republican Rep. Tom Tiffany win Wisconsin’s open governor’s seat. The ads, running on radio, cable TV and online, compare the tax and public-safety policies of Democratic rival David Crowley, now Milwaukee County executive, with Tiffany’s congressional record. The contest is considered a toss-up, with Crowley holding a roughly 3.5-point lead in polls compiled by one outlet.
One outlet-WI’s State Director Megan Novak said the spending brings the group’s total outlay in Wisconsin to $10 million, part of a national $20 million effort that also targets races in Michigan and Kansas. Activists for the group are slated to knock on their one-millionth door next week, expanding voter-contact operations alongside the new media push.
Why it matters
The ad spend could sway a tightly contested governor’s race that may shift Wisconsin’s political balance.
