Kodal Minerals moves to secure West African lithium with Ghana acquisition
London-listed Kodal Minerals has agreed to purchase up to 80% of Ghana's Asamankese lithium project, expanding its West African battery-metal portfolio.
Kodal Minerals, which began lithium production in Mali through a joint venture with China’s Hainan Mining, is now set to acquire a majority stake in the Asamankese exploration project in Ghana. The move reflects growing investor interest in West Africa as China and Western nations vie for critical minerals needed for electric vehicles and renewable-energy storage. Africa already hosts significant lithium activity, highlighted by over $2 billion of Chinese investment in Zimbabwe since 2021.
Why it matters
The deal could boost West Africa's role in the global lithium supply chain, affecting EV and renewable-energy markets.
