Korea's Human Rights Commission withdraws defense guarantee recommendation for former President Yoon

The National Human Rights Commission of Korea has rescinded its earlier call to ensure former President Yoon Suk Yeol’s right to defense during his impeachment trial and has sought a public apology for the recommendation.

The commission voted to repeal the prior resolution that urged the Constitutional Court to protect Yoon Suk Yeol’s defense rights in his impeachment case and to issue an apology for issuing it. Chair Ahn Chang-ho, who was appointed by Yoon, abstained from the vote. The original recommendation was adopted in February 2025 after Yoon’s supporters demanded a fair trial following his brief martial-law decree on Dec. 3, 2024.

Why it matters

The reversal signals changing political pressure on Korea's human-rights body amid a high-profile impeachment case.
